Becky Carter
Becky is a biracial, cisgender, transracially adopted female whose ancestors are West African and Sicilian. She has a particular interest and capacity for supporting those impacted by Racial, Ancestral, Intergenerational Trauma and Oppression. Becky is also dedicated to nurturing resilience with Adoptees and their families who present with attachment struggles, developmental trauma, and loss.
Becky is passionate in her advocacy and work with Male Survivors of Sexual Trauma who are curious about how stress and trauma impacts their body and nervous system, facilitating groups for male identifying survivors of sexual trauma. There, she creates a safe and collaborative process for those who feel shamed, betrayed and vulnerable to be witnessed and to find their voice using somatic-based healing methods. Her techniques help clients gain awareness of the embodied threat responses related to sexuality, sexual functioning and intimacy .
Becky is a parent of two adopted children and a boxer rescue dog named, Poppy. In her free time, Becky likes to travel, enjoys singing, playing guitar, exploring restaurants and writing poetry.
Becky’s Background:
- BA in Psychology from DePaul University, 1995, MS in Human Services Counseling, National Louis University, 1999.
- Completed 3+ years of Somatic Experiencing training, exploring Transforming Touch currently.
- Active in roundtable discussions of treatment of Complex Trauma and Dissociation through the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD).
- Presents often in the community on The Impact of Sexual Trauma for both Male and Female Survivors and Somatic Sexual Healing.
- Community Trainer and Educator on Issues of Developmental Trauma and Loss in Adoption.
